Kids do still read from a physical books. How do I know this you ask – because they still have to earn AR (Accelerated Reader) points in school.
Supply List:
Fabric – scraps
Ribbon
Cutting:
Cut 8-9 of scrap fabric at 1.25″ or 1.5″ x 2.5″
Additionally, cut 1 of quality fabric at 2.5″ x 7″ for backing
Plus, cut 1 of woven fusible interfacing at 2.5″ x 7″
Cut ribbon 4 1/2″ long
Construction of fabric bookmarks DIY:
Use a 2.0 stitch length in all sewing.
For the first strip, lay right side up on end of woven interfacing on the non-bumpy side.
You will fuse the interfacing later, so be sure to sew strips on the non-bumpy side of interfacing.
Take the next strip and put right sides together. Sew 1/4″ seam allowance.
Finger press open. Do not press yet.
Repeat with all strips of scrappy fabric until the interfacing is completely covered.
You may have a piece that is shorter at the end. You will trim it off to match.
Here is the front with it covered.
The back looks like this.
Now it’s time to fuse this to the wrong side of the backing. You might need to trim it up first. Press it on.
Trim the top with pinking shears.
Cut the ribbon ends at an angle and fold it in half offsetting it slightly.
Place it inside one open end and pin it in place.
Start in the corner. Backstitch and sew 1/4″ seams across ribbon.
Continue sewing 1/4″ seams all the way around the bookmark.
Once you have seamed it up all the way around…
You will trim it close to the stitching with pinking shears. This keeps it from raveling; however, some raveling is expected.
Perfect! Ta da! Now go make more. Wasn’t that fast and easy?
Here are some more quick gifts to whip up.
