Hoop it Up – How to embroider a name on a towel
Hoop the stabilizer on the embroidery hoop. Use a sticky stabilizer. Score the top of the stabilizer inside the hoop with a straight pin.
Make an X in the center and tear away the paper revealing the sticky part face up.
Set up your embroidery machine
Enter your design in the machine. I downloaded some larger fonts from Designs by Juju. Then I spelled out the name and edited it with Embrillance Software, the free version. Save to a USB stick and put in your embroidery machine.
You may have to rotate the design 90 degrees to fit it on the length of the hoop. It will tell you the size of the design on the screen.
Put the hoop in the guide on your machine.
Mark the location on your towel where you want the name to be, centered. Make sure it is in the center. Also, it is important to face the towel in the right direction shown on your screen. Stick the towel down good. You can move the design around on the machine screen to reach exactly on your mark.
Add extra stabilizers
You can add a piece of heavy weight stabilizer underneath the hoop for extra stability. Free float it.
Finally, add some “Wash away AquaFilm topping” on the top of the towel. This helps the weave of the towel stay down and not poke up through the letters. Also, another brand calls it solvy, AquaSolve.
Pin down in the corners to the towel.
Lower presser foot and start!!
Finally, when it is finished sewing, pop it out of the hoop.
Remove the pins.
Tear away all the stabilizers
It’s best the hold your finger over the stitching when tearing off the stabilizer. It perforates around the stitching. Be careful removing the sticky paper. Just don’t grab a loop of the towel when you are pulling it off.
Additionally, pull off the AquaFilm. The small pieces will come out with a spritz of water.
In conclusion, you can add this embroidery to a handmade adult bib. Place in the lower two thirds of the towel. See a post on how to make the adult bib here. If it is for a graduation gift, put it above the bottom band about 4 “ if there is a band. Be mindful of the direction that the design will sew.
Ta da – all done. Way to go!
