How to Make a Nine Patch Baby Quilt
Finished size of baby quilt is 36” x 48”
Within a few months of each other, I needed to make three baby girl quilts. Therefore, I decided to start with and teach you how to make a nine patch baby quilt. I hope you enjoy making this quilt. Supplies you will need to learn how to make a nine patch baby quilt.

Thread
Main Fabric – 1 yard
White Fabric – 1/2 yard
Accent Fabric #1 – 1/2 yard
Accent Fabric #2 – 1/4 yard
Backing Fabric – 1 3/4 yards
Bias Binding – 5 yard length (2 1/2”)
Step 1
Prepare and make 2 1/2” bias binding – Set aside
Step 2
Pick your Accent Fabric by matching the colors printed on the selvage
Wash, dry, and iron all your fabrics
Step 3
Cut (4) 6 1/2” strips the WOF (width of fabric)
Cut strips into (24) 6 1/2” squares
Step 4
Square up the edge of the white fabric
Cut (7) 2 1/2” strips the WOF
Step 5
Square up the edge of the accent fabric 1
Cut (6) 2 1/2” strips the WOF
Step 6
Sew one accent fabric, one white fabric, and another accent fabric
The white will be down the middle
You will have three sections
Press seams toward the darker fabric
Cut strips into 2 1/2” sections
You should have (48) 2 1/2”
Step 7
Square up the edge of the accent fabric 2
Cut (2) 2 1/2” strips the WOF
Step 8 – Continuing on with how to make a nine patch baby quilt
Sew one white fabric, one accent 2 fabric, and another white fabric
The accent 2 fabric will be down the middle
You will have two sections
Press seams toward the darker fabric
Cut strips into 2 1/2” sections
You should have (24) 2 1/2”
Step 9
Sew the sections together, nesting your seams to form your 9 patch blocks
Pressing the seams as you go.
Step 10
Lay out your blocks alternating the main fabric and the nine patch blocks
Be mindful if you have a one way design to face them the same way
You will have 6 blocks across and 8 blocks down for a total of 48
Step 11
Place right sides together by placing column 2 on column 1
Chain piece them together.
Repeat with column 4 on column 3
Repeat with column 6 on column 5
Sew all columns together.
Additionally, sew all the rows together.
Your top is done.
Step 12
Lay down your backing with wrong side up
Use spray adhesive and place batting on top of the backing
Use spray adhesive and place top face up on top of the batting
Step 13
Quilt your top as desired
Trim edges even with the top
Step 14
Add bias binding
Lay it out and make sure no seams end up at the corners.
Sew the raw edges of the binding to the edge of the quilt.
Turn to the back and hand stitch the binding down.
Step 15
Add a label if desired
Step 16
Present your beautiful quilt to the lucky recipient!
