How to Make a Quillow
Learn how to make a quillow! This goes together quick and easy. Great to keep in your car! It’s a quilt and a pillow.
These were popular back in the 90’s. I found several I had made for my girls when they were little. So I set out to make a new one with a more current fabric. Plus, I think the grandkids will love it. I had to make my own pattern. So let’s get started.
Supplies
2 1/2 yards of fabric top (if it’s cut crooked, you may want to get 2 3/4 yards)
2 1/2 yards of fabric back (if it’s cut crooked, you may want to get 2 3/4 yards)
Hi-Loft Batting at least 45″x72″
Rotary Mat, Rotary Cutter, Quilting Ruler
Sewing Machine and Thread
Instructions
Wash, dry, and iron your fabrics.
Square up the ends of fabrics and batting.
Cut fabric top, fabric back, and batting all 45″ x 72″ (for the quilt)
This is the batting I used because I wanted it to be fluffy, not flat.
Cut one each of fabric top, fabric back, and batting all 18″ x 18″ (for the pillow)
Lay out your batting.
Next, Layer the back right side up on top of batting. Clip together.
Furthermore, layer the top right side down on back. Clip together. (The fabric top and back are right sides together.)
Sew a 1/2″ seam all the way around, leaving an opening of 10-12″ to turn.
Additionally, sew a 1/2″ seam all the way around the pillow following the same process, leaving an opening to turn.
Trim the corners.
Turn right side out putting your hand between the top and backs.
Poke out the corners good.
Sew 1/4″ seam all the way around the quilt and the pillow. This closes the opening.
Time to quilt. You can tie it or sew straight seams or sew diagonal seams. This is your preference. A long arm may be your choice. Check your batting label. It will tell you how close your quilting needs to be to keep the batting from bunching up inside. Mine says every 4″ apart.
Mark the center of the quilt part. Mark the center of the pillow part. Be mindful of directional fabric. Pin the pillow on at the bottom of the quilt. Sew 1/4″ seams on the sides and bottom of pillow, leaving the top of pillow open.
Great job! YOU DID IT!!!
Folding it up
Now to fold. Place the quillow on a table or on the floor. The pillow is on the underneath side.
Fold in both edges to center along the pillow seams.
Fold the pillow over on top encasing the ends of quilt.
Next, fold down 1/4 of quilt. You can eyeball it.
Fold down another 1/4 of quilt.
Stuff the rest down into the pillow.
